DescriptionFour men, a woman, and a girl are gathered at the entance to an inn. A sign above the door reads "CROMWELL / by ZEPHANIAH P..." A sign by the door reads "GOOD / ALE / PRAYERS / AT 6 / N.B. Good Cake". A wicker bird cage hangs nearby. A heavyset man dressed as a cavalier is seated outside in a chair, leaning on a cane. The girl serves him a drink in a large lidded tankard. Behind her another man is leaning against the wall with his legs crossed. In the doorway behind, are a man smoking a pipe and a woman wearing a kerchief. On the right, a man dressed as a puritan is reading from an open book. His conical black hat is on the wall behind him. In front of him, a dead cat is hanging from a tree branch by its neck. A paper in a bowl in the foreground is inscribed "Cromwell / Inn / Banbury / Bill / of / Fare". The name "Roeste" is inscribed on the wall in the left foreground.
NotesDate Note: William H. Dodd is listed as an artist living in Hartford in the 1850 Federal Census. This lithograph probably dates from later in that decade, although the firm name W.H. Dodd & Co. is not recorded for this period. Dodd began business in partnership with John H. Bingham in 1860. The firm only became W. H. Dodd & Co. in 1885. However, stylistically this print appears unlikely to date from this latter phase of Dodd's career and more likely to date from the 1850s.
