DescriptionEleven men and a dog standing on stairs with decorative riser in front of four story urban office building at corner of Asylum and Union Place. Man holding sheet of paper near door is wearing top hat. Iron fence, railings and masonry sidewalk are on two sides of building. Large letters on left side and hanging wood sign say "Adams Express Company". Sign over door on right "New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad Co." On left corner is a barbershop, possibly of Henry Leibee. On left are utility poles and street lamp. Signs on Union Place include: "Hart[ford] Chemic[al Company]," "Gilletts Tea, Coffee, Spices". Inscription on back: "Adams Express Company, Hartford / 1860s"
NotesSubject Note: New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad located office at 466 Asylum Street in 1873 and were near the Union Railroad Station. A. B. Gillett operated a coffee and tea store at 30 Union Place until 1883 when he established the Hartford Chemical Company soap manufacturers. Adams Express Company established around 1851 and was around until about 1920. They shipped parcels, freight and letters throughout the United States. Moved main office from 8 Central Ave to 452 Asylum Street around 1873.
