DescriptionView of Stamford from across the Mill River. Two men in top hats, one of them probably a self-portrait of the artist sketching, are seated on the hill in the foreground. On the opposite side of the river are numerous houses and trees. The mast of a sloop, in the Ship Canal, is visible between the spires of the Congregational and Episcopal Churches. The Canal itself is not visible. Smoke rises from a chimney of a building in the far left. Cleared fields are visible in the left background.
