DescriptionA view of the small village of Whitneyville in Hamden. A man watches a horse-drawn carriage carrying a man and a woman in to town. Industrial buildings and houses line a road that leads to the opening of a covered bridge across the Mill River (not visible). The slope of East Rock is in the background. In 1798, Eli Whitney, the inventor of the cotton gin, established the first factory in America for making firearms on the site of Whitneyville.
