DescriptionView of Stanford sketched from a rocky hill looking across the Mill River. Two men sit in the foreground one drawing, probably a self-portrait of the artist and his assistant. Down the river to the left after a bridge, smoke fills the sky from an iron foundry. To the right a "common stone wall" divides the river from a grove of "locust" trees. Above this point two church spires are evident the first belonging to the "Congregational" and the second to the "Episcopal." Between these spires the "mast of a sloop" is noted. This ship rests on a canal from the ocean excavated to this point in 1834. Over the dwellings and businesses trees and meadow lined hills extend into the distance.
NotesSubject Note: Preliminary drawing for Connecticut Historical Collections, John Warner Barber, New Haven, 1836.
