DescriptionView of Groton Heights from the West, across the Thames River. Fort Griswold, occupies the crest of the hill. To its left appears the base and part of the shaft of the Groton Monument, apparently under construction. The monument commemorates the massacre of the garrison of Fort Griswold by the British in 1781. It was completed in 1830. Scattered houses are located along the shore of the river below the fort
