DescriptionView of the central part of Clinton. A road leads down a slope and then uphill towards a Congregational Church on Meeting House Hill. At the foot of the hill the road crosses the Indian River. A shipyard, probably belonging to a member of the Buell family, with a vessel under construction is visible at the left, half-hidden behind the house. Numerous buildings are on either side of the road in the foreground, including, on the right the "Killingworth Hotel / J. C. Chittenden" with a prominent oval sign. A tree just before the bridge on the left is identified as a "weeping willow." Details of the church and a house, labeled "Silliman" appear about the main drawing
NotesSubject Note: Preliminary drawing for Connecticut Historical Collections, John Warner Barber, New Haven, 1836. When Barber made his drawing, the village was known as Killingworth and was the most populous part of that town. It incorporated as Clinton in 1838.Status
