DescriptionView of the central part of Hamden, looking north. The central road is a turnpike from New Haven to Hartford. On the left, behind a "board fence" and "Apple trees" is the Episcopal Church. Farther down the road are several other buildings, in front of one is a small tavern sign. Behind is a "Maple" tree. One of the farther buildings is identified as the "Post Office," another as "Dr. Poole," a third (scarcely visible) as the "Gristmill on New Haven Canal and Waggon iron springs..." perhaps a reference to the Mt. Carmel Axle Works. Mt. Carmel is visible in the distance. The large building on the right is identified in Barber's text as the "new hotel." Detailed sketches of several buildings surround the main drawing
