DescriptionTwo small figures stand beside the Groton Monument. A small building is at the right. The monument itself is in the form of an obelisk. It was erected in 1830 to commemorate the massacre at Fort Griswold in 1781. According to John Warner Barber, the monument is 92 feet tall, is constructed of local granite, and cost $11, 000. The drawing is inscribed "Sam l Green N[ew L[ondon / care of Mr. Bacon Stage proprietor Lyme."
