DescriptionThe buildings of Newgate Prison occupy a hill in the center of the composition. The land slopes to the left and distant hills are visible in the background. To the right, another building appears behind a low wall surrounded by pine trees. A figure sketching, probably a self-portrait of the artist, is seated on a rock in the foreground. At the time Barber made his drawing the cavern beneath the prison was being worked as a copper mine by the Phoenix Mining Company, incorporated in 1830
