A sign nearby reads: "METHODIST HILL". A picket fence surrounds a yacht on a boat trailer in the left foreground. An American flag flies from a frame house with louvered shutters. Additional children run along the sidewalk and have a snowball fight in the left background. A woman stands on th porch of the frame and brick building in the center, possibly the Essex library. The building has half-timbering in its gable. A dentist and a patient in a dentist's chair are visible through the bay window of the house at the far right. Additional houses, leafless trees, and evergreens are on the hillside below. The Connecticut River is in the distance. Ice boats are on the ice of South Cove in the right background.
