DescriptionComplex of industrial buildings. The building in front has a smokestack, fire escapes, and a clock tower with a pyramidal roof and a weathervane. A sign over the arched doorway reads: "BAKER-LEVETT INC." A river flows over a mill dam at the left. Horse-drawn vehicles and an automobile are on the road. Men and women walk on the sidewalks. Iron fences line the road. There appears to be piles of lumber behind the factory. Houses and trees are in the background. Some trees appear to be poplars. Bicycles, presumably used by factory employees as transportation, are in sheds in the left background and in a separate oval vignette showing a smaller factory building. There appear to be greenhouses in the background of this smaller image.
NotesSubject Note: The factory has been indentified and confirmed as the Deep River Piano Factory.

Subject Note: It is not clear what kind of industry Baker-Levett was or where it was located. Although the artist was a Hartford resident, it is not clear that Baker-Levett was a Connecticut business. (Finlay 5/28/2002)
