DescriptionTwo views of Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch in Hartford, Connecticut, one of them taken on the day of its dedication. In one photograph, an arched stone bridge appears in the foreground and the Connecticut State Capitol appears in the background. In the other photograph, spectators, mostly men, and horse-drawn vehicles crowd the foreground, while men in uniform march beneath the arch in the background, and pennants and flags fly from poles. In both, the brownstone arch with its towers and frieze is clearly visible.
NotesDate Note: September 17, 1886, the day the arch was dedicated as a Civil War monument, was the anniversary of the Battle of Antietam. (Finlay 4/13/2014)
