DescriptionDrawing of buildings and businesses along Main Street in downtown Hartford, Connecticut, primarily depicting the demolition of 721 Main Street. The top of 721 shows evidence of demolition and there is a crane visible behind it. The sidewalk in front of 721 sports a covered walkway or barricade, and there are several pedestrians gathered there, as well as on the street in front of the other shops. There are automobiles parked in front of 703 Main Street. Local businesses shown include Blutstein, White Tower (hamburgers), Teamster Local 559, A&M Stores, a drug store and a market.
NotesSubject Note: A reproduction of this drawing appears in Richard Welling's Hartford Sketchbook, along with a personal account of his experience with 721 Main Street and demolition in Hartford in general. He says, "721 was the third location where I hung my brushes since 1960 when I moved back to Hartford to do my freelance art. It seems that wherever I go the building comes down!"
