DescriptionFormal studio portraits and amateur snapshots of George Keller. In all photographs, he is wearing a suit and necktie and eyeglasses. In one photograph he is holding a hat. In two photographs he is outdoors in a park or garden.
NotesSubject Note: George Keller, son of Thomas Keller and Susan Pratt, was born in Cork, Ireland on December 15, 1842, and died in Hartford, Connecticut, July 7, 1935. He was educated in New York City public schools until sixteen years of age and was then apprenticed to an architect, Mr. Anderson, who was working on the wings of the United States Capitol building. During the Civil War he worked as a draftsman in the Brooklyn Navy Yard doing detailed draftsmanship for small warships. After the war, Keller moved to Hartford, Connecticut where he was employed by J.G. Batterson designing monuments, but he soon became a became a self-employed architect. George designed the Grace Episcopal Church in Windsor, Connecticut, the Memorial Arch in Hartford, Connecticut and various other soldiers and sailors monuments in New York and New Hampshire. Keller married Mary Barbara Monteith Smith in 1887 in Edinburgh, Scotland at the Free Church of Scotland. They had three children, Hilda, George, and Walter.
The Keller family lived in Hartford, Connecticut, primarily on Park Terrace, and had a summer home in Norfolk, Connecticut.
