DescriptionA locomotive is lying upsidedown with its wheels in the air after an accident. Portions of a railroad trestle are visible at left and right. Bystanders, chiefly men wearing dark overcoats stand on the bridge, the train, and on the ground. A fast-flowing river runs over rocks in the foreground.
NotesSubject Note: On 15 January 1878, a locomotive and several coaches of a Connecticut Western Railroad train plunged from a bridge into the Farmington River in Tariffville, Connecticut. Thirteen people were killed and more than seventy were injured. (Finlay 12/21/2013)
