DescriptionA team of yoked oxen stands in the foreground. In the background, a locomotive and two railroad cars lie on their sides on a river bank. Spectators, mostly men wearing dark overcoats, stand on both sides of the river. Two women stand on the far side of the river. A leafless tree is at the right and additional trees are on a hill in the background.
NotesSubject Note: On 15 January 1878, a locomotive and several coaches of a Connecticut Western Railroad train plunged from a bridge into the Farmington River in Tariffville, Connecticut. Thirteen people were killed and more than seventy were injured. Oxen were used to haul the damaged train cars out of the river. (Finlay 12/21/2013)
