DescriptionBust-length portrait of a man with dark hair, long in the back with short bangs in front. He wears a black jacket, white stock and ruffled whtie shirt. The background is dark.
NotesSubject Note: John Treadwell was born in Farmington, Connecticut on 23 November 1745, the only son of Ephraim and Mary (Porter) Treadwell. He graduated Yale in 1767, and in 1776 was chosen as a Representative in the General Assembly, a position which he held until 1785 when he was appointed one of the Assistants of the Upper house. He continued this position until 1798 when he was chosen Lieutenant Governor. Was governor from 1809-1811.
Treadwell married Dorothy Pomeroy of Northampton, Massachusetts on 23 November 1745, with whom he had four children. Treadwell died on 18 August 1823 aged 78, his wife died in January 1830, aged 84.


Date Note: According to museum records, Joseph Steward operated a museum at the Old State House in Hartford, Connecticut as early as 1796, where it is known he would also display his paintings. (Lee 10/23/2014)
