Description[Portrait painted in an oval on a rectangular canvas of an older man with long white flowing hair, wearing a reddish brown coat open at front and showing a bit of light colored lining at the neck, black vest and white stock. At bottom of picture in lighter gray panel is the inscription "John Phillips Eqr. L.L.D." background of oval dark brown, of rectangle gray with lighter gray border. Simple wooden frame with narrow gilt edge.]
NotesDate Note: According to museum records, Joseph Steward operated a museum at the Old State House in Hartford, Connecticut as early as 1796, where it is known he would also display his paintings. (Lee 10/23/2014)
