Description[Three quarter length portrait of a middle aged woman wearing a grey dress, white kerchief and cap. The dress has a tight bodice, full skirt and three quarter length sleeves. Her right hand holds a book; her left arm is on a stand. She is seated on a high back chair upholstered in red and she leans forward slightly. An open window at the upper right with blue drapery shows landscape with one tree in the foreground and water in the background] with buildings along the shore.
NotesDate Note: According to museum records, Joseph Steward operated a museum at the Old State House in Hartford, Connecticut as early as 1796, where it is known he would also display his paintings. (Lee 10/23/2014)
