DescriptionHalf-length studio portrait of an elderly white-haired man wearing a coat, vest, shirt, and necktie. His hairline is receding and he has long white sideburns.

NotesSubject Note: James B. Hosmer was said to be the oldest citizen in Hartford at the time of his death on September 25, 1878. He was born in Hartford on September 27, 1781 and was a life-long resident of the city. After retiring from business as a drygoods merchant, he served as president of the Pratt Street Savings Bank, treasurer of the Wadsworth Atheneum, and a vice president of the American Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb. He also served as treasurer of the Connecticut Historical Society until shortly before his death.

Date Note: Both James B. Hosmer, the subject of this photograph, and Daniel Camp, the photographer, died in the same year, 1878. (Finlay 11/2/2013)
