DescriptionView of a boat in the water displaying a large sign above it. The sign has light-colored letters on a dark background and reads: "CACAO VAN HOUTEN Meilleur que tous les Chocolats". Another smaller sign on the side of the boat says in part: "VETEMENTS / THIERY & CIE". The boat consists of two stories. The top level has a flat deck that is enclosed on the sides by metal rods and mesh fencing. Several clothes lines run from one end of the boat to the other, covered in laundry. The large sign is hung above the clothes. The smaller sign hangs on the fencing on the side of the boat facing the camera. Several women stand on the lower level, right along the side of the boat. There are piles of clothing or other material draped over the edge in front of them. In the background, across the water, there is a row of trees in front of a row of multi-story buildings.
NotesAccording to cataloging worksheet in object file, this picture was taken in France during the vacation of Horace Bushnell Cheney (1868-1936) and his wife Mary Pierson Cheney (1874-1949).
