DescriptionAmerican flag consisting of 35 stars and 13 red and white stripes. The 13 alternating horizontal red and white wool stripes are stitched together, with a red stripe at the top and bottom of the flag and the canton resting on a white stripe. The canton is two pieces of blue dyed wool stitched together horizontally towards the bottom of the canton. The canton contains 35 white cotton stars appliquéd to the front side of the canton, with the back side of the canton cut to reveal the stars on that side. The stars are arranged in five horizontal rows of seven, with the orientation of the points being vertical. The linen header is sewn to the hoist end of the flag and contains a brass grommet at the top of the header. The bottom of the header contains a hand stitched eyelet.
NotesHistorical Note: According to the donor, this flag belonged to her mother, Miss Maria Hall of Washington, Connecticut. She was a nurse in the Naval Academy Hospital in Annapolis, Maryland, for two years during the Civil War. Exchanged prisoners were brought to that hospital for care, and they could see this flag as it flew over the hospital. (Hudson 4/5/2002)
