DescriptionSampler worked in dark brown, dark blue, medium brown, light brown, medium green, cream, mauve, and gray-brown silk threads on a plain-woven linen ground in cross stitches. The sampler is squarish, oriented horizontally. It is laid out with five rows of two alphabets and the numbers 1 through 9 followed by a zero, over an inscription. The inscription is "Caroline J Tuckers/ Samplar [sic] Wrought Je. 12/ 1843 in the 11th yr of her/ age Hartford Ct". Certain lines of alphabets are separated by straight, narrow borders. There is a four-sided narrow border.
The sampler has a double-turned 1/8 inch hem on all four sides.
Letters and Numbers: There are two alphabets. The letters are uppercase block in alphabet 1, and lowercase block in alphabet 2. The letters J and U are present in both alphabets.
Stitches: The sampler is worked in cross stitches over three threads and cross stitches over two threads.
Condition: The sampler probably has light to severe fading.
NotesTechnique Note: There are small dots underneath the underline and superscripted "e" in "Je" and the "th" in "11th".The sampler has a double-turned 1/8 inch hem on all four sides.
