NotesThis photograph appears to have been based on an ambrotype. Many small cracks are in the emulsion of the original are clearly visible in this photographic copy when it is examined with a magnifying glass. Such cracks would not be characteristic of a daguerreotype. Some small fragments of the image had flaked off and were lacking at the time the copy was made, and one substantial piece appears to have been glued back in place in the woman's collar. It is probable that the photograph was taken in an attempt to preserve the image of the deteriorating original. (Finlay 4/2/2002)
