DescriptionCrazy quilt consisting of twelve square blocks of roughly equal size with a rectangular block added along one side to give the quilt extra width. Each block is made up of irregularly shaped pieces of silk that is foundation-pieced, or hand-stitched onto a backing; each block is then hand-stitched together. The seams are covered with decorative embroidery stitches in cotton thread of contrasting colors. Many of the silk pieces are embroidered with sunbursts, stars, and other motifs including a hairpin. The date, "1839" is embroidered onto one piece. Each side of the quilt has a black silk taffeta ruffle with white embroidery at the edge. The plain blue muslim back is decorated with tufts of silk ribbon of the same color.

Condition: The silk has shattered in several places, and one piece of red silk is missing. The top has several minor stains including a white stain on the ruffle.
NotesHistorical Note: Charlana Cady Sheldon and David Holmes Sheldon were the grandparents of Frank D. Case, father of the donor.
