DescriptionMap of Meriden, Connecticut, showing streets and street numbers and names of some property owners and major businesses. The numbers in circles indicate relative elevation. Harbor Brook; the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad; and the Meriden, Waterbury, and Connecticut River Railroad run through town. Bradley Park, the State Farm, and the Start Fair Grounds are located on the outskirts of town. Circles radiate from the city center, indicating distance. A blue line encloses an irregular area around the city center. A list of mayors of Meriden is at upper right; a list of fire alarm telegraphs giving their locations is at the right. Individual photogravures depicting the houses of W. F. Davis, R. H. Curtis, W. W. Lyman, E. J. Doolittle, Colonel C. L. Upham, George H. Wilcox, John W. Coe, Seth J. Hall, Isaac C. Lewis, H. Wales Lines, Samuel Dodd, and H. W. Hirschfeld are glued along the top of the map.
Label TextMeriden was incorporated as a city in 1867 and Stephen C. Pierson, who made this map, at one time served as the city engineer. Pierson both conducted the surveys on which the map is based and copyrighted and published the map. While it was not uncommon in the early nineteenth century for one individual to take multiple roles in the production of a map, by the 1890s, it was most unusual. Although no printer is credited, Pierson would have employed a commercial printing firm to reproduce his original hand-drawn map.
