DescriptionMap of a large portion of Hartford County, including Hartford, East Hartford, Manchester, South Windsor, Glastonbury, Rocky Hill, Wethersfield, New Britain, Berlin, West Hartford, Bloomfield, Windsor, and parts of Farmington, Avon, Simsbury, Granby, East Granby, Windsor Locks, and East Windsor. Rivers and ponds are colored blue. All state highways, local roads, and streets are identified by name or number. A "proposed expressway" is shown crossing the Connecticut River at Windsor Locks. A key to the streets extends across the lower portion of the map and continues at upper right..
Label TextOn this map, the Hartford-Springfield Expressway, the forerunner of Interstate 91, is shown complete as far as Poquonock Avenue in Windsor. The stretch of highway terminating at Poquonock Avenue--and creating massive traffic problems there--was opened on Labor Day 1954. The "proposed expressway" which continues on across the Connecticut River on a proposed bridge in Windsor Locks would not be completed for another six years. The map provides a good overview of central Connecticut in the years immediately following World War II, before the interstate highway system was constructed and while much of the wartime housing constructed for defense workers by the Federal Public Housing Authority was still in existence. Large areas of the outlying towns remained undeveloped farmland.
