DescriptionA one-room frame schoolhouse painted red is situated on a grassy lawn surrounded by leafless trees. A road and a rail fence are in the background, with a rocky hillside beyond.
NotesSubject Note: According to the donor, this scene shows the little red school house that was at the foot of Barnes' Hill in Burlington, Connecticut, on the road between Burlington Station and the Center. It appears as it was when her mother, uncles and aunt attended school in the 1850s, and when her brothers attended in the early 1880s. She also noted that the maple tree in the painting was planted on the first Arbor Day by her brother George. (Lee 11/19/2013)Status
