DescriptionBlack satin shoe, originally made in the 1770s or early 1780s with latchets to buckle over the instep. These latchets have been cut off and used to patch the vamp, which was split to make it larger. The vamp was then covered with a strip of pale pink silk ribbon, overlaid with V's of black ribbon, and a black silk bow was added at the tip of the pointed tongue. The toe is also pointed, and the heel is in a short, narrow Louis, or "Italian" style. The silk and inner sole are lined with plain-woven linen. The shoes are straight. The leather heel is continuous over the front of the heel.
