Label TextFrederick Law Olmsted once told Hartford, Connecticut's park commissioner Francis Goodwin that it was the rare beauty of Hartford's north meadows seen as a young man that had inspired him to become a landscape architect. In 1900, when the Hartford Park Commission proposed cutting a road through these meadows to connect Riverside Park with Keney Park, some property owners objected. Arthur Mather claimed that the road would ruin the fine hay meadow from which hemade his living. John N. Risley objected that the road would cut through his ice houses. Though it is not clear that this map is directly related to this project, it shows the area where the road would have been constructed.
NotesCartographic Note: No scale

Subject Note: Meadow Road in Hartford's North Meadows has no connection with Meadow Road in Hartford's South Meadows. Fishfry Street takes it name from fishfries that were once held there during the spring run of alewives.
