DescriptionA man and a woman are seated in upholstered armchairs in a domestic interior. The man wears a jacket, vest, shirt, and tie. The woman wears a dress with separate white cuffs, possibly trimmed with lace. She holds what appears to be a handkerchief. The man reads from a large open book, probably a Bible, that rests on a table covered with a patterned tablecloth. A lamp is on the table. A patterned rug is on the floor. Drapery is in the left and right background. A fire burns in a fireplace directly behind the table. Flowers, probably roses, in vases and books are on the mantle.
