NotesSubject Note: William Starke Rosecrans (1819-1898) was appointed a Brigadier General in the regular army soon after the outbreak of the Civil War. He was a successful commander at Rich Mountain, Virginia, and subsequently at the battles of Iuka and Corinth. After Corinth, in October 1862, he was promoted to Major General and given command of the XIV Corps. As commanding general of the XIV Corps, Rosecrans secured victories at Stones River and Chattanooga.
