DescriptionConstruction of the new G. Fox and Company department store building on Main Street in Hartford is in progress. The structural steel firders outline of the first five stories is partially completed. A sign reading "This Entire Fireproof Building / Will be Occupied By / G. Fox and Company /Temporary Stores / Pratt, Trumbull and Church St." appears on the third story level. Tall cranes are visible in the background. Men are at work on the girders and on ladders leading against the marquee in front of the building. Men, women and a girl with a baby carriage are on the sidewalk. Two automobiles, a truck and a horse-drawn wagon are on the street. The corner of the Cheney Block is on the right and the [F.W. Wool]worth Co. 5 and 10 Cent Store" is on the left.

NotesSubject Note: G. Fox & Company, a large department and dry goods store, was located at 956-986 Main Street, Hartford. Brown, Thomson & Co., another department store, occupied the Cheney Block at 920-942 Main Street. Photograph is dated 5 July 1917. The same store also appears in 1995.36.855. (Agins 8/16/2013)
