DescriptionView of the Brown, Thomson & Company, a Richardsonian Romanesque commercial building on Main Street, Hartford, designed by Henry Hobson Richardson in 1876 for the Cheney family of Manchester. For many years Brown, Thomson & Co., a department store occupied the lower stories. The building is constructed of brownstone, with round arches and towers at the corners; striped awning shade the windows on the ground floor. Part of Main Street and automobiles parked on the eastern side are also visible. Two bronze plaques attached to the building at its southwest corner read "BROWN THOMSON AND COMPANY." Awnings extend out from the top of the first floor of the building, above the display windows that extend along Main and Temple Streets. Two dentists' offices are visible: one is on the third floor and the other is on the fourth floor. One of the offices features a sign reading "Prentiss Dentist" on the window.
Men and women, many of them blurred from movement, crowd the sidewalk.

NotesSubject Note: In the 1920 Hartford city directory, Brown, Thomson & Co. was listed as "Conn.'s Biggest Department Store."
