DescriptionThe back of a two-story Gothic revival house features bargeboards on its central gable, a bay window, louvered shutters, and porches including a glassed-in porch at the right which may have been intended to serve as a conservatory or greenhouse. The backyard of the house is in the foreground and features a two-seated swing and a doghouse.
Label TextThis house on Hawthorne Street in Hartford, Connecticut, (part of the Nook Farm neighborhood) was first built for Thomas Clap Perkins and his wife Mary Beecher Perkins, (sister of Harriet Beecher Stowe). They lived in the house from 1855 to 1866. After their residence, it was occupied by Charles Dudley Warner from 1866 to 1884. This was also the childhood home from 1908 to 1917 of Katharine Hepburn, when it was the home of Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Hepburn.
NotesRelated Note: Octavius Jordon was the architect of this house, built for Thomas Clap Perkins and his wife, Mary Beecher Perkins.
