DescriptionOval bust-length portrait of an elderly man wearing a coat and tie. He appears also to be wearing a wig, which is tied in a queue with a ribbon.
NotesSubject Note: Oliver Ellsworth was born in Windsor, Connecticut, in 1745. He received his undergraduate education at Yale and Princeton. Upon returning to Windsor, he was admitted to the bar in 1771. He moved to Hartford in 1775 and was a member of the Continental Congress throughout the Revolution. He was one of the delegates from Connecticut to the Constitutional Convention and one of the first two senators from Connecticut. He was appointed Chief Justice of the United States by George Washington and served from 1796 to 1800. He died in 1807.
