DescriptionMap of the Western Reserve and Firelands in Ohio, with Lake Erie to the north. The map depictes Huron, Lorain, Medina, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Portage, Ashtabula (spelled "Astabula" on the map), and Trumbull counties. Each county is divided into numbered squares, some of which are labeled with the name of the townships they represented. Courthouses, meeting houses, colleges, mills, lighthouses, and villages are marked with symbols listed in the References list, in the lower left corner. Physical features depicted include the lake, rivers, and waterfalls. Roads are shown as double-parallel lines. Below the map is a textual description of the Western Reserve.
Label TextIn 1792, the Connecticut legislature set aside 500,000 acres in the Western Reserve for those families from Danbury, Fairfield, Greenwich, Groton, New Haven, New London, Norwalk, and Ridgefield whose homes were burned by the British during the American Revolution. In 1826, when this map was issued, the Western Reserve was already part of the state of Ohio. Perhaps that explains why the map was engraved in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and published in Ohio, rather than produced in Connecticut, as earlier maps of the area often were. Nelson Township, where the map was published, is located in Portage County, Ohio; fewer than 3000 people were living there in 2000.
