On the right is a street index and lists of schools, libraries and educational facilities; recreational, cultural and historical places; governmental offices and facilities; and miscellaneous, which consists of cemeteries, hopitals and the humane society.
Label TextThis 1976 map of Newington, a classic bedroom suburb of Hartford, Connecticut, shows a proposed interstate highway, Route 291, slicing through town and intersecting with the Berlin Turnpike (here called the Hartford-New Haven Turnpike). Interstate 291 was originally planned as a beltway around the city of Hartford. It was widely believed that the construction of the highway would ease congestion on the Berlin Turnpike and encourage development in the area. Newington residents were disappointed when the plan was scrapped in 1979. Only the northeastern arc of I-291 from Windsor to Manchester was ever built.
