DescriptionMap of Hartford, Connecticut, as it appeared in 1640, with a cow pasture to the north, the Great (Connecticut) River to the east, the South Meadow to the south, and the West Field to the west. Roads are lined with land lots which are labeled with the owner's name. Small squares representing buildings are shown at the edges of the lots.
Label TextIn 1838, William S.Porter of Farmington, Connecticut, was engaged by the city of Hartford to produce a map showing that city as it appeared in 1640. It was printed in 1851 by the Hartford lithographers Case & Green, and published in the Hartford Daily Courant on March 22 of that year. Case & Green also printed additional copies which they sold themselves. The map enjoyed enduring popularity with antiquarians and the general public and was reprinted later in the century by the firm of William S. Dodd or one of his successors and again in the twentieth century. It remains a useful guide to early Hartford to this day.
NotesCartographic Note: No scale

Date Note: Dodd's Lithographic Company, who may have printed this map, were in business from 1899 to 1909. It seems likely that the map dates from this period.
