DescriptionMap of Washington Street in the town of Norwich, Connecticut, depicting its shoulders, side walks and intersecting passways. The only building depicted belongs to Hezekiah Lord and is located east of the road. On the west side of the road lies land belonging to William C. Gilman.
Label TextWashington Street was and remains one of the main streets in Norwich, Connecticut. It runs parallel to the Yantic River, and in the nineteenth century, it was lined with stately homes in large lots. Hezekiah Lord's house, which appears on this map, was one of these. The fact that the street is fifty feet wide with broad sidewalks on either side suggests its importance as a thoroughfare. Neither the street nor the sidewalk would have been likely to have been paved at this date. At several points, "passways" are shown crossing the shoulder, which was evidently recessed and served as a gutter. These passways would have been used as bridges by pedestrians crossing from the sidewalk to the street. A broad "passageway" beside the Lord house crossed both sidewalk and shoulder and evidently allowed vehicles access to and from the street.
