DescriptionPortrait of a young girl, facing left, with dark brown eyes and brown hair. She is wearing a high waited red dress with short, puffed sleeves and a pleated bodice. She is holding a flower in her right hand and her left hand is behind her back. The miniature is in a wooden frame with a gold, painted stripe, and gold painted mat.
Label TextThe subject of this miniature portrait, Frances Rogers was the first daughter of William Hazen Rogers, who was the founder of the Rogers Brothers silverware company. This miniature portrait was probably made to commemorate the child's death at the young age of three. Miniature portraits often functioned as tokens of mourning. The rise of child-centered families during this period made loss harder to bear and contributed to the popularity of memorial portraits.
NotesDate Note: The child's life dates suggest that the miniature was probably painted in 1830 as a commemorative mourning miniature. (Ozzone 5/2/2013)
