Label TextMost miniatures painted in the colonial and early republican periods were smaller, densely colored, and made with thick, oval pieces of ivory. Miniature portraits such as this one made in the 1830s showcased the changing fashions and styles of miniature portraiture. Artists started to use darker colors and large thinner pieces of ivory. Artists also adopted the rectangular shape over the oval sheet of ivory to fit in with the fashions of the time. The subject of this miniature portrait is Gloriana Havens Eldridge, who is the half-sister to the artist to whom this work is attributed, Charles William Eldridge.
