Label TextIn this portrait by her stepbrother, Charles William Eldridge, Ellen Paulina Eldridge is shown wearing a lace collar and a lace modesty piece. Modesty pieces, which could be pieces of lace, muslin, cotton or silk, were tucked into or arranged around the necklines of low-cut dresses in order to create an attractive and fashionable appearance, while ensuring the wearers weren’t revealing too much skin.
