DescriptionLarge flat stones lead to the doorway of a colonial saltbox house. The frame house has center chimney and a back ell. A small tree, possibly an elm, is to the left of the door. A board fence is to the left of the house. A second house immediately to the left is indicated in pencil and inscribed "Brick house." Additonal buildings and a factory smokestack are in the right background.
Object number1964.8.1
NotesDate Note: The drawing does not appear in Whitefield's book, Homes of our Forefathers, published in 1882, but was apparently made as a preliminary study for it. Some features of the drawing, including the tree at the left and form of the back ell appear to have been incorporated into Whitefield's final lithograph of the Barnard House, though that is a larger house and the preliminary drawing for it shows a very different leanto in the back and a very different tree to the left.
