DescriptionHalf-length miniature portrait of an older man with gray hair and blue eyes. He is wearing a white stock or cravat, white shirt, a black waistcoat, and a double-breasted jacket with four gold buttons.
Label TextThis is thought to be a portrait of Ebenezer Waldo, who was born on 3 April 1771 in Canterbury, Connecticut. Waldo, a highway surveyor, selectman, and school inspector, and his wife Cynthia Parish had four children, including Loren Pinckney Waldo, Sr., who married the sister of the artist Charles William Eldridge, who probably painted this portrait. Eldridge is known to have painted several portraits of the Pinckney family.
NotesDate Note: This portrait shows Waldo as an elderly man, probably shortly before his death in 1840. His clothing suggests a date in the 1830s. (Finlay 4/13/2013)Status
