DescriptionHalf-length miniature portrait of a woman with brown hair and brown eyes. She is wearing a white cap with a yellow bow, a white handkerchief with lace edging and a white dress. The metal frame is scalloped on the front and the back of the frame has an opening with a locket of braided hair under the glass. In the center of the braid there is a piece of ivory with two palm leaves, the initials "EE" in script and a bird underneath engraved on it. The frame has a suspension loop at the top.
Label TextEliza Avery was a member of a prominent Groton, Connecticut family. This miniature was probably painted in 1794, at the time of her wedding to William Eldridge. It is one of a pair of portraits with the couple's initials on the backs of the frames. Eliza and William lived in New London and later in Tolland. They were the parents of the miniature painter Charles William Eldridge.
