DescriptionPortrait of a young girl with a red barret, red high-waisted dress with short puffed sleeves and lace edging, ruffled collar, and black underskirt. The girl is sitting to the left of a brown and white dog. The miniature is in a brown leather-covered wooden case.
Label TextIn the second half of the eighteenth and early nineteenth century there were shifting attitudes on family, love, and children. Miniatures celebrated these changes and conveyed the greater enthusiasm for romantic and familial bonds. The subject of this miniature portrait, Frances Elizabeth Waldo, and her brother Loren Pinckney Waldo, Jr. were both painted as children with animals by their uncle Charles William Eldridge. In this miniature, Frances is depicted with a dog, representing companionship and loyalty.
