DescriptionMiniature portrait of a woman with brown eyes and brown hair up with a black ribbon. The woman is wearing a blue dress, which falls off of her shoulders. The woman is sitting on a deep red chair.
Label TextThis unknown woman's hairstyle suggests that her miniature portrait was painted sometime in the 1840's or 1850's, at a time where photography was rapidly replacing paintings as the standard form of portraiture. Much more affordable than painted miniatures, photographic portraits quickly became much more common. The larger-than-usual size of this miniature and the woman's pose may have been influenced by contemporary portrait photographs.
