DescriptionBust length miniature of a man facing center. He has grey eyes, black hair, and a beard; hair is combed back and styled upwards at top. He wears a black jacket with wide lapels, a white stock with a high collar and a black bow tie secured tightly under chin.
Portrait is set in wooden frame, possibly mahogany, with a gold border around image. Nailed to verso of frame is a brown, heavy paper. Secured into backing are two brass suspension loops along with four stickers; the first, located at top is a white circle sticker with navy blue print that reads, "F.W. TIERNAN & CO /ART STORE /NEW HAVEN, C.T."; below this is a large off-white sticker with black print and handwritten ink that reads, "Portrait of Henry Albert Seymour /Born at New Hartford, Conn. /Died at Bristol /Conn. April /6, 1897 /New Haven Paint and Clay Club /SIXTH ANNUAL EXHIBITION, 1906 /TITLE Portrait /ARTIST Mildred C. Jordan /ADDRESS 129 Whalley Ave /OWNER OR PRICE /RETURN TO Artist /Attach this Label to back of Exhibit"; placed beside this is a third sticker, white with a red border with two stamps, the first is a set of wings, the second, a monogram reading, "GDS"; below this is a fourth, partial sticker that states a short biography of the subject: "Henry Albert Seymour was... ford, /Conn., 22 Jan., 1818, and... Conn., /6 April, 1897. He was married... 28 /July, 1844, to Electa, daughter of... and /Laura (Wells) Churchill. She was... New /Hartford 5 April, 1818, and died at Bristol 10 Dec., ... Painted by Mildred C. Jordan. /From a daguerreotype dating from about 1860 /in the possession of their son, George Dudley /Seymour, of New Haven and Coventry.".
NotesObject Note: This is miniature is one of eight that George Dudley Seymour commisioned Mildred Jordan to paint, most based on various portraits in his possession. The subject is Seymour's father, Henry Albert Seymour, and according to Seymour, painted from a Daguerreotype dating to about 1860. (Lee 10/24/2014)
